Zelenskyy Calls European Unity “Best Interceptor” Against Russia
Speaking at a panel on the second day of the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskyy stressed that no European country can rely solely on its own resources to defend itself, saying, “no country in Europe that could rely only on its own technology and money to defend itself,” and added that “no one would stand alone” in a full-scale conflict.
Zelenskyy explained that Ukraine’s investment in “interceptors and protection” is designed to reinforce collective defense, asserting that Russia aims to undermine European and transatlantic unity.
“They want to break it. Why? Because our unity is the best interceptor against Russia’s aggressive plans, the best one, and we still have it,” he said. “Our unity is what protects us.”
He emphasized the importance of “real” and “strong” security guarantees for both Ukraine and Europe, noting that agreements are prepared for signature with the United States.
“And with Europe, we think that the agreement on security guarantees should come before any agreement to end the war,” he added, stressing that such guarantees answer the key question of “how long there will be no war again.”
Zelenskyy expressed hope that U.S. leadership and the American public hear Ukraine’s message, while expressing gratitude for “all the real help.”
Turning to peace negotiations, he remarked that considerable time is being spent on talks to end the war with Russia, which is approaching its fifth year. He expressed hope that the next round of discussions will be “serious, substantive, helpful for all of us.”
Following two earlier rounds of talks in Abu Dhabi, trilateral negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are scheduled in Geneva, Switzerland on February 17–18.
