Majority of Europeans Perceive Threats to Their Nations, Personal Security
The poll, conducted ahead of the Munich Security Conference at the request of the European Commission, found the highest levels of perceived threat in France at 80%, followed by the Netherlands and Denmark at 77%, and Germany at 75%.
When it comes to defense spending, 32% of respondents feel the European Union has not done enough, while 34% believe their own countries have fallen short. Despite this, 52% of Europeans expressed confidence that the EU can bolster security and defense. Confidence was highest in Luxembourg at 76%, Portugal at 74%, and Lithuania at 71%, but lower in the bloc’s three largest members, with only 47% of Germans and Italians and 40% of French respondents sharing this trust.
Support for the EU’s defense investment is strong, with nearly three-quarters of Europeans backing current spending or advocating for increased funding. The highest levels of support were recorded in Portugal at 89%, followed by Finland at 83%, Lithuania and Spain at 80%, and Denmark at 78%.
The survey, conducted online between January 5 and 12, involved around 27,000 participants across the EU’s 27 member states.
