Starmer, von der Leyen Urge Europe to Strengthen Its Role Within NATO

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed on Saturday that Europe needs to enhance its role within NATO while maintaining close ties with transatlantic partners, according to a joint statement.

The leaders met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference to reaffirm their dedication to strengthening collective European defenses amid rising security threats.

"They agreed that Europe needs to step up and work towards becoming a more European NATO, while protecting our strong transatlantic ties," Starmer’s office said in the statement.

Starmer emphasized his "high ambition" for the UK-EU partnership, expressing interest in deeper integration across economic, defense, and technological areas.

The two officials also pledged to advance joint work ahead of the next UK-EU summit and to intensify ongoing negotiations for a food and drink agreement aimed at lowering costs for consumers.

Earlier in his conference address, Starmer highlighted the need for Europe to reduce certain strategic dependencies and reiterated the importance of creating a "more European NATO."
