France Dismisses U.S. Greenland Move as "White House Nonsense"

(MENAFN) France has categorically rejected the possibility of American military action against Greenland, with officials labeling such proposals as absurd and fundamentally at odds with NATO founding principles.

In a Wednesday interview with media, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot declared that any scenario involving one NATO member state launching an assault on another would violate the alliance's foundational objectives and defy strategic logic.

"As for a possible intervention by force, even if I do not engage in political or diplomatic fiction, this is not political fiction; it is nonsense from the White House," Barrot stated.

"It makes absolutely no sense for a NATO country to attack another NATO country. It would make no sense at all and, above all, it would be absolutely contrary to interests."

Barrot's sharp rebuke follows a series of provocative declarations from US President Donald Trump and senior administration figures, who have indicated that Washington maintains "all options" on the table concerning Greenland—including potential military force. These statements have generated significant alarm throughout European capitals.

The French foreign minister reaffirmed that Greenland's territorial sovereignty remains non-negotiable, emphasizing that the Arctic region belongs to its inhabitants and that all future determinations regarding its status lie exclusively with Greenland and Denmark.

Historic Coalition Pledges Ukraine Security Framework
Barrot also described what he characterized as a groundbreaking development in collective defense arrangements for Ukraine, emerging from Tuesday's Coalition of the Willing summit held in Paris that convened European and global partners.

"But clearly yesterday was not a meeting like the others," he said. "It was a big day for peace, for peace for Ukraine and for Europe."

The foreign minister noted that approximately 30 nations spanning Europe, North America, and Asia reached an unprecedented consensus to integrate their military resources, ensuring durable security guarantees for Ukraine following any peace settlement.

"This is totally unprecedented," he said.

Regarding American participation, Barrot clarified that US involvement extends beyond diplomatic endorsements to include tangible military assets supporting the Coalition of the Willing's operations.

"First of all, it means providing a certain number of military capabilities in support of the military capabilities of this Coalition of the Willing," he said, explaining that these forces would function in rear positions supporting Ukraine's military establishment.

He emphasized that Ukraine's armed forces, projected to maintain approximately 800,000 personnel, would constitute the nation's primary defensive barrier.

While acknowledging that the coalition's final communiqué avoided detailing specific response protocols, Barrot insisted that US security commitments carried substantial weight.

"If there is an international interposition force, so to speak, in Ukraine, and if there is a Russian attack, the United States will retaliate and will help the European troops," he said.
