EU scrutinizes Grok over AI sexually explicit content of minors
Speaking during a regular briefing, a Commission representative stated, "I can confirm from this podium that the Commission is also very seriously looking into this matter," signaling that the issue has drawn immediate regulatory attention at the highest level.
According to officials, regulators are fully conscious of recent changes to the chatbot’s features. One spokesperson explained that the Commission is "very well aware of the fact that X, or Grok, is now offering a spicy mode showing explicit sexual content, with some outputs generated with childlike images."
The same official rejected any attempt to frame such material as a mere feature enhancement, stating unequivocally: "This is not spicy, this is illegal. This is appalling, disgusting. This is how we see it, and this has no place in Europe," underscoring the EU’s zero-tolerance stance toward such content.
Authorities emphasized that the platform remains under close observation for its adherence to the bloc’s Digital Services Act, which governs online safety and platform responsibility. The renewed scrutiny follows reports that prosecutors in France have opened a preliminary inquiry into whether the chatbot generated sexually explicit deepfake imagery involving minors.
Reiterating the Commission’s broader regulatory posture, the spokesperson added that X has already experienced enforcement action in the past and should not underestimate the seriousness of ongoing oversight. As stated by officials, "very serious about DSA enforcement.
They will remember the fine that they have received from us back in December. So we encourage all companies to be compliant, because the Commission is serious about enforcement," reinforcing the message that compliance is not optional.
