During a joint press briefing in Berlin, Merz noted that early signs suggest possible Russian involvement, yet he emphasized the importance of a comprehensive investigation.
"Of course, it's too early to make a final assessment, but there are some indications as to whose interests such an attack might serve, and the Polish government is probably right in its suspicions," he stated.
Merz described the event as part of a wider strategy of Russian hybrid warfare aimed at destabilizing European countries.
"From my perspective, this fits into a broader pattern of sabotage acts we've seen repeatedly in Germany in recent years, as well as drone overflights and espionage attempts from Russia," he remarked.
He indicated plans to confer further with Polish authorities in the upcoming days.
"I will ask them if they have any further information about the origin of this attack. However, the suspicion is more likely to be confirmed than refuted," Merz added.
Macron supported the expression of solidarity with Poland, underscoring the necessity for European partners to remain united and continue their support for Ukraine.
